English Language Requirement
Springfield College recognizes the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as the primary ways of demonstrating English proficiency. Scores from other English language proficiency tests will be considered on a case by case basis. Certificates of Completion from Intensive English Language Schools/Programs may also be considered on a case by case basis.
Other tests may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
* English proficiency scores are valid for two years from the date of the exam.
Exemptions From The English Language Proficiency Requirement
Some non-U.S. students may be exempt from the English language proficiency requirement. You may be exempt from taking an English language proficiency test if you:
- Live in an English-speaking country / English is an official language of your country
- Can document that the language of instruction for your secondary or undergraduate degree was English
- Submit Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) scores that meet admissions requirements / Passing College credit (C or higher) from U.S. College or University in ENG 101 or higher
Exemptions are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.
English Language Learning
Applicants who do not meet Springfield College’s English language requirement may retake an English language test in attempt to meet the requirement or seek additional coursework to increase their English language proficiency.
Springfield College does not offer an on-campus English language learning program. Applicants who need to improve their English proficiency before gaining admission to Springfield College may enroll in an English as a Second Language program. We recommend the International Language Institute (ILI) of Massachusetts located in nearby Northampton, Mass. Students who satisfactorily complete the advanced level of the ILI’s Intensive English Program will receive a Certificate of Completion from ILI and will be exempt from taking the TOEFL or other language test for admission to Springfield College.
